The new Catholic Church of Oradour under repair in 2017 (and restored in 2018)
This view shows the church (dedicated
to Saint Martin) in the new (post 1953) Oradour-sur-Glane and as can be
seen, it was undergoing extensive repair work in 2017. The church is of
modern, pre-cast concrete construction and is not of great architectural
merit or style, being of a very modern design. It has been obvious to to
me that the structure has not been fully watertight since my first visit
in May 1998 and is fact signs of damp / mould can be seen in
the first photographs dating from that time. I am not a surveyor and cannot say
with complete confidence what the causes of the decay / water ingress are, but
my guess is that the problems go back to poor materials and a shoddy approach to
construction in the early 1950's. © Michael Williams: December 2017 ... revised October
