The Barbe twins grave at Marsoulas
This memorial to the 5 year old Barbe twins, Claude and Michel, is in the church graveyard at Marsoulas and the plaque briefly states that they were, "Murdered by the Germans on the 10th June 1944 at the age of 5 years old." It is difficult to see how such a killing in reprisal for an attack by partisans can be justified, even though here at Marsoulas the Germans did have some reason to take reprisals, unlike at Oradour. Note again that the killers are referred to as "Germans" and there is no specific mention of the Das Reich or the SS. © Michael Williams: November 2007
