Looking down the Rue Emile Desourteaux, the Girls school is on the right, the road to the cemetery is just visible on the left-hand side of the bend in the road. The sets of steps in the foreground are a common sight in this part of the village and they are needed due to the slope of the road. As can be seen pedestrian safety was not high on the list of priorities at the time the village of Oradour was laid out. Walking through the streets would have been a somewhat hazardous exercise, especially at night. Note the excellent state of the tram wires after 54 years (photograph taken in 1998).
