Frayssinet-le-Gélat
This view of the Church at Frayssinet-le-Gélat in Department 46, The Lot, has been taken on the D660 road from Cahors. The main memorial to the dead of 21st May 1944 is just to the right of the war memorial in the centre of the view. Briefly what happened on the 21st May, is that some troops of the 3rd company, 1st battalion, of the Der Führer regiment under the command of Adolf Diekmann and Otto Kahn, entered the village searching for signs of resistance activity. An elderly woman, foolishly fired at them with a shotgun and the reaction was swift and brutal, but at least on this occasion there had been some small justification for it unlike at Oradour on the 10th June. © Michael Williams: revised
