Frayssinet-le-Gélat memorial to the dead
This memorial lists the names of those killed by Diekmann's troops on the 21st May 1944, in reprisal for being fired on by an elderly woman (unfortunately at this time I do not know which of those listed it was, but I believe that she was hung not shot). The inscription on the upper tablet reads, "All these fell under the Germans bullets, May 21, 1944" and the lower tablet reads, "These have been hung." Just 20 days later Oradour-sur-Glane was to be attacked by the members of the same regiment led by the same officers. The main memorial is out of sight to the left. © Michael Williams: December 2007 |
